GLOSSARY
ADD - Attention Deficit Disorder. A neurological condition whose symptoms include
impulsivity and distractibility. (From 'Driven to Distraction' by Ed M Hallowell

ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - A neurological condition as the
above but whose symptoms also include hyperactivity (fidgeting, inability to sit
still or concentrate on one activity, extreme distractibility, 'sensation seeking'
behaviour).
Dyscalculia - Difficulty in dealing with numbers and calculation as an aspect of
dyslexia (Joffe, 1980)
Dyslexia - A complex neurological condition which may affect many areas of learning
and function, ..and may be described as a specific difficulty in reading, spelling
and written language, numeracy, music, motor function and organisational skills may
also be involved. (British Dyslexia Association, 1996)
Dyspraxia - An impairment, or immaturity, of the organisation of movement (Dyspraxia
Foundation).
Neurocognitive - Relating to the activity of the brain (from 'neuro' - the nervous
system - and 'cognitive' - relating to knowledge and perception).
Neurological - Relating to the nervous system and the activity of the brain.
Sensorimotor - Relationship between the nervous system and the body's ability to
move.
NB: Many people exhibit symptoms of more than one of the above conditions. Definitions
are only useful in helping us to better understand and address these conditions.
